The Beauty of Islam
For anyone trying to follow the
journey begun by Abraham, conversion
to Islam should recommend itself
with compulsive force. It�s the most
plausible of the three religions
that look back to him...
Nonetheless, the suggestion that
Islam might be preferable to either
is objectionable to modern Western
minds. It provokes visions of
frenzy: failing states, suicide
bombers, fanatical mullahs, shrouded
women, burning books, oppressed
minorities. But it should also
conjure images of tranquillity:
serene mosques, the circles of dhikr,
a certain detachment from the claims
of politics, distaste for the
extremism within its own ranks of
which Mohammed warned, and � until
fairly recently � better treatment
of religious minorities than
Europe�s.
For most of its history Islam has
been the most relaxed of the three
faiths. It neither aches for the
coming of a Messiah nor announces
that outside the Church there is no
salvation....
If I�m remembered for taking up any
cause in the Commons, which I�m
quitting at the next election, it
may be for fencing at Islamism and
its fellow-travellers in Britain.
But Islamism is a polluted tributary
of the great river of Islam, and my
allergy to a politicised version of
the religion hasn�t deterred me from
sitting at the feet, from time to
time, of its traditional, classical
form....
Third, it has Sufism � the sum of
that spiritual inheritance. I�m not
dewy-eyed about Sufis, who are no
more perfect than other believers.
But the tradition they follow is one
of the world�s great religious
movements, balancing the Koran�s
proclamation of the transcendence of
God � �Who begetteth not, nor is
begotten, and none is like Him� �
with its persistent whisperings of
immanence, of a God who �is nearer
to him than his jugular vein�. Many
of the great Sufi texts aren�t
available in English. I�ve been
trying to read one that is. Jilani
of Walthamstow is named after Jilani
of Baghdad � a giant of medieval
Sufism and founder of the Qadri
order. I�ve ploughed my way through
61 of the 62 discourses in his Al-Fath
Al-Rabbani � literally �the
Revelations of the Lord�. -- Paul

Fundamentalist leaders and rightwing
columnists made nauseating
statements. Neo-televangelist Hamid
Mir made fun of "secular
fundamentalists" who refused to
attribute natural catastrophes to
God's wrath.
The leadership of the now-defunct
MMA described the earthquake as a
punishment for people's sins (gunahon
ki saza). Advising people to seek
God's forgiveness, they pinpointed
the actual reason for the
catastrophe: the un-Islamic ways of
Pakistanis and obscenity in the
media. Apparently, the only sin the
earthquake victims had committed,
thereby inviting God's wrath, was to
vote the MMA to power in the

Radical Islamism & Jihad
Jihadist warnings from Moscow
Basayev's writings show that the
Chechen jihadist movement, like
others across the world, was a
product of modernity � not
traditionalist Islam. His iconic
2004 book, The Book of the Mujahid,
was derived bizarrely from the
Brazilian pop novelist Paulo Coelho.
�In late March of last year,�
Basayev wrote in the preface, �I had
two weeks of spare time when I got a
hold of Warrior of the Light: A
Manual. I wanted to derive benefits
for the mujahideen from this book
and this is why I rewrote most of
it, removing some of the excesses
and strengthened all of it with
Quranic verses, Hadiths and stories
from the lives of the disciples [of
the Prophet].�
India has lessons to learn from
Russia's experience. Its jihadists,
like those of the north Caucasus,
are intimately entwined with
Islamist groups in Pakistan �but,
increasingly, are acquiring the
capabilities needed to stage major
operations independently. Facing up
to the new challenges of a
globalised jihadist movement will
need unprecedented levels of
international cooperation. --

Terrorism: A Wave of Introspection
Sweeping the Muslim World?
The scholars of today seem to have
realised, though belatedly, that Ibn
Taimiya�s fatwa had been a source of
inspiration for the extremist,
radical and sectarian schools of
thought in the Muslim world and had
given birth to Al Qaeda,Taliban,
Lashkar-e-Taiba, Al Shahab and other
terrorist organisations all over the
world causing death, destruction and
slaughter of innocent people in the
name of Jihad. The acts of violence
have not only killed non-combatants
among the Muslims and non-Muslims
but have also damaged the image of
Islam as a religion of peace because
even during a war, Islam is against
assaulting or harming
non-combatants, women, children, the
elderly and unarmed persons. The
so-called jihad had its political
consequences as well. It did the
Islamic world more harm than good.--

Muslims and Islamophobia
How modern Islam has made UK
citizens homeless in their own homes
Jim McConalogue�s write-up is a
not-so extreme example of the
Islamophobia sweeping Europe. I came
across several Europeans during my
recent three-week tour of
Switzerland, Sweden and United
Kingdom who expressed similar fears
of Islam and Muslims. I attended
several seminars dealing with the
subject in which lay public took a
great deal of interest, though, of
course, not all were as fearful of
what Islam and Muslims are going to
do to their beautiful lands and
their culture of freedom and
tolerance of all views and
lifestyles. Views expressed in this
article may be distasteful to many
readers of New Age Islam, but I
think it is important for us to be
aware of what many in the West and
indeed other parts of the world are
thinking of us. This article is also
important as it gives a scholarly
account of the backdrop in which
Islam is being discussed in Europe.

I will restate, reiterate and
paraphrase what I have already said
on this matter over the past four or
five years: the Islamic jihadists
are clearly winning their battle
over the British people. In the UK,
the Labour government has shown that
it is more than willing to
jeopardise national security in
favour of its oppressive
multicultural agenda. Violent
Muslims � a hotchpotch of infantile
soul-searching converts, theocratic
barbarians and permanently incensed
and uneducated nobodies � who are
supposed to be living as British
citizens are intending to kill the
people they live among. Clearly, the
British multicultural project is
failing to such a degree that
citizens not only possess a visceral
hatred of one another but they are
now at war with one another...
The creed of Islam, supported by its
jihadist interpretation, cannot be
supported by the British
multicultural programme � perhaps,
more to the point, we may have
arrived at that point that we must
now face that our multicultural
programme can no longer afford this
Islamic deviancy. Unlike other
valuable and rich cultures and
religions that integrate
successfully, modern Islam seems
steadfast in its principles of war
and violence. Islam carries with it
a powerful political and religious
history. This violence, which the
editor of The Asian Age, M. J. Akbar,
once called the �Medina Syndrome,�
imparts the belief that Islam is
under such a significant threat from
its enemies that its only response
is to be gripped by collective
unity, faith, violence and war." --

Objectives Resolution and
secularism�Part VIII
The founder of Pakistan, Mohammad
Ali Jinnah, wanted a separate
country for Muslims but his
political upbringing in a pluralist
society prevented him from declaring
Pakistan an Islamic state. Contrary
to the general perception in India,
Mr Jinnah was arguably a secular and
liberal Muslim who wanted a Pakistan
where all citizens would be equal in
the eyes of the constitution
irrespective of their religion,
caste or creed. But leaders like
Liaqat Ali Khan and power hungry
opportunistic religious leaders
wanted it to be otherwise. In this
beautifully written series titled,
"Objectives Resolution and
Secularism", Mr Wajahat Masood
delves deep into history to find out
how Jinnah's dream of a secular and
democratic Pakistan was shattered. �

In Muslim sultanates many a anti-Shariah
step would be taken in the presence
of ulama and oppressive orders and
instructions used to be issued. But
except some bright examples, the
ulama never dared to oppose them.
During the kingdoms after the fall
of the Abbasid caliphate the ulama
had enjoyed the status of advisors (
and of course, declared jihad as and
when required.)but they did not have
the courage to demand that the
reigns of the kingdom be handed over
to them so that they could run the
government according to the Islamic
sharia system.
This is a historical fact that in
Muslim governments the army enjoyed
greater powers and influence than
the religious peshwas. In fact, the
demand for the Islamic laws by the
religious peshwas after the
formation of Pakistan got the fillip
from some specific conditions and
circumstances which arose
accidentally and which had no
relation with the original plan of
the division of the country. Before
going into the detail, let's have a
look on the demands for forming the
government of Pakistan on the basis

Munir Commission Report - Part -27:
The conduct of Maulana Sultan Ahmad
at the meeting of the Majlis-i-Amal
Justice M. Munir commission
investigated the large-scale riots
against the Ahmadya sect in Pakistan
in 1953. His report is an
eye-opener. It shows that our ulema
are not even able to agree on a
definition of who a Muslim is.
Justice Munir had called heads of
all Islamic schools of thought and
asked them the definition of a
Muslim. No two ulema agreed. It also
exposes the pusillanimity of our
so-called scholars of Islam and
their near-total disregard of the
beauty and generosity of Islam. �

The second difference between the
Jama�at-i-Islami on the one side and
Majlis-i-Amal and the Ahrar on the
other relates to the conduct of
Maulana Sultan Ahmad at the meeting
of the Majlis-i-Amal held on 26th
February in the office of the
khatm-inubuwwat movement in Karachi.
Maulana Abul Ala Maudoodi�s version
is that though he had received a
notice of this meeting he himself
was ill and had given certain
instructions to Maulana Sultan Ahmad
by telephone which were followed by
a detailed letter written to him on
22nd February 1953, the substance of
the letter and the telephonic
message being that the
Jama�at-i-Islami�s view that direct
action should not be resorted to,
nor any unconstitutional step taken,
should be pressed at the meeting and
that if this proposal was not
accepted, Maulana Sultan Ahmad
should declare that the Jama�at had
resigned membership of Majlis-i-Amal.

Pakistani journalists are busy
discussing and analysing the
proposed amendments to the
Constitution, or reporting on the
first big conference of the landless
farmers of Pakistan in which the
intellectuals and experts expressed
their opinions on the plight of
farmers and their apprehensions and
suggested solutions. Right? Wrong!
For Pakistani media, these affairs
are less important than the

What is known and where are we now?
North Korea and Iran share a common
hostility to the US and have a long
history of military and economic
cooperation. Iran's ballistic
missile force, the largest in the
Middle East, is largely based on
transferred North Korean missiles
and weapon designs. North Korea has
also sold Iran conventional weapons,
including rocket launchers, small
arms, and mini-submarines. The two
countries are known to have close
intelligence ties and to exchange
intelligence regularly. The extent
of North Korean cooperation with
Iran on nuclear issues remains
unknown. However, both are known to
have received help from AQ Khan�s
proliferation network. Iran helped
to finance North Korea�s nuclear
programme in exchange for nuclear
technology and equipment, according
to CIA sources cited in a 1993

Responsibiltiy
The written statement of Sadr
Anjuman Ahmadiya, Rabwah, lays
responsibility for the disturbances
on the Ahrar, the Jama�at-i-Islami,
the ulama and the Provincial and
Central Governments. The Anjuman
accuses the Ahrar of having
exploited a religious issue for the
purpose of regaining their lost
position and rehabilitating
themselves with the public. Similar
motives are attributed to
Jama�at-i-Islami, and it is alleged
that Maulana Abul Ala Maudoodi�s
object in emphasising on an Islamic
Government for Pakistan was; to
occupy the first place in the State
and that it was with this ulterior
object that Jama�at-i-Islami made a
common cause with the Ahrar and the
other ulama. The addition of a ninth
demand to the eight demands of
Jama�at-i-Islami for the future
Constitution of Pakistan, which was
intended to assign to the Ahmadis
the position of a non-Muslim
minority in the Constitution itself,
is pointed out as having been
prompted by a political and not by a
religious motive. The same motive is
attributed to the ulama who allied
themselves with the Ahrar in the
campaign against Ahmadis, and it is
alleged that the object of the ulama
was precisely the same as that of
Jama�at-i-Islami, namely, to acquire
political power and control by
emphasising the religious aspect of
the future Constitution. The Central
Government and the Provincial
Government are brought in for a
share of the blame because of their
indifference to the storm which, as
a result of intensive propaganda,
had been brewing for a long time,
without either Government having
made any effort to stop it. The
Punjab Chief Minister�s proclamation
of 6th March 1953, that the Punjab
Government accepted the correctness
of the demands and was deputing a
Provincial Minister to go to Karachi
to place the Punjab�s point of view
before the Central Government, is
stated to have caused complete
collapse of law and order and let
loose a reign of terror against
Ahmadis, and in proof of this
allegation several cases of murder,
loot and arson that occurred in
Lahore after that proclamation are
mentioned.

Growing Islamophobia: Do We Muslims

Shahin's oral statement to the
current Thirteenth session of UN
Human Rights Council in Geneva on 16
March, 2010:
I would like to confine myself to
reflecting on the problems of
religious minorities, particularly
Muslim minorities who are facing
xenophobia and related forms of
intolerance today in an atmosphere
of widespread Islamophobia. We
Muslims are also complaining of an
attempt to encourage Islamophobia.
The French ban on veils and Swiss
ban on minarets has further vitiated
the atmosphere. We do not know for
sure how much of this is deliberate
as a sort of anti-Islam crusade as
we Muslims allege and how much is a
paranoid reaction to growing
radicalism, extremism and
exclusivism in Islamic societies.
But I find a note of introspection
on the part of us Muslims and Muslim
governments completely missing in
the continuing debate. I intend to
do precisely that today. While we
Muslims demand, and rightly so, the
freedom to freely practise and
propagate our religion in the
non-Muslim majority countries, we do
not seem to worry about the plight
of religious minorities living in
Muslim-majority lands.
Contribution of Petrodollar Islam
That Muslim societies in general
have radicalised over the last
decades cannot be denied. This has
been a direct result of tens of
billions of petrodollars having been
spent in promoting a rigid,
obscurantist, desiccated version of
Islam, shorn of all its beauty and
bounty. Preachers of what I can only
call �petrodollar Islam� have gone
around the world asking Muslims to
develop a separate identity that
distinguishes them not only in the
practice of Islamic prayer rituals
but also looks and apparel. The
phenomenal rise in Muslim women
wearing hijab and an assortment of
veils or men growing what is called
an Islamic beard is no accident.
Discrimination against religious
minorities in Muslim-majority
countries has grown. Anti-blasphemy
laws, for instance, have been
routinely used to harass and commit
acts of violence against religious
minorities. The Report of the
Special Rapporteur on freedom of
religion or belief, Asma Jahangir,
mentioned the case of Christians and
the minority Muslim sect of Ahmadis
who are continually harassed on
baseless allegations of blasphemy in
Pakistan despite the government�s
stated commitment to fulfil its
international obligations. -- Sultan
